If you identify as an entrepreneur and want to contribute your skillset to building a future with more diverse leadership, I highly recommend you take a look at a Not-For-Profit organization called BUILD. BUILD is an entrepreneurship program for underserved high school students that teaches them how to build their own business while becoming the CEO of their own lives.
This is more than sparking the love of entrepreneurship for these students, although I’ve met many in the program who have told me they plan to start their own businesses after college. It’s a 4 year program where students learn teamwork, leadership, self-confidence, communication, grit, problem solving and self-management.
Does it work? I’ll let the metrics speak for themselves:
If you are new to volunteering and find the prospect uncomfortable I can assure you that the BUILD team makes it very easy to participate. They are friendly, helpful and just as encouraging to volunteers as they are to the student. Just find your local chapter, email them and let them know you are interested in volunteering and they will take over from there.
I also encourage you to read a letter from BUILD CEO, Ayele Shakur. “Together we can ReBUILD America to ensure a brighter future for ALL.”
